Personally I would say these cops are lucky they didn't get shot, barging into someones bedroom at 3AM. It seems that their intent was of a good nature, but just come back in the morning to do your public service. There is nothing acceptable about busting into someones house at 3am to tell them their door is unlocked. I'm pretty sure it isn't illegal yet to leave your doors unlocked, whether its a smart idea or not is still your own business.
